Old Town Temecula
Take a Step Back in Time…
The Old West lives on, right in the center of Temecula! Come breathe in the atmosphere of yesteryear – the historic buildings are steeped in it and the undeniable charm of the region is a direct reflection of it’s past. Though it may feel like a simpler time, a time of pioneers and shoot outs, saloons and 49ers, modern day Temecula has everything you could hope to find in a thriving, contemporary city. There are nearly 650 great antique dealers, art galleries, outstanding restaurants and casual eateries, wine bars, pubs, gift shops and more waiting behind the wooden storefronts of Old Town. Aside from the sightseeing and shopping, visitors also flood into Temecula for the wide variety of special events, festivals, great food and wine, nightlife, casino partying and romantic winery getaways. So, if you’re looking for a city that offers fun “Western Days,” specialty boutiques, car shows, horse-drawn carriage rides and an endless schedule of summer events – look no further – Temecula has what you’re looking for.

Probably the best time to come get your Old West groove on is during ‘Western Days’
… you would swear that you had stepped back in time as staged gunfights and bank robberies with cowboys dressed in period clothing shoot it out with real guns using blank bullets.
You can also chat with women dressed in beautiful, authentic dresses from days gone by, complete with frilly parasols and period jewelry as they serve refreshments at the hospitality tent. You won’t want to miss out on this event, which is usually held in May of each year, it’s a great time for the whole family – the kids can’t get enough of it!
While you’re soaking up the Ol’ West, check out the Welty Building which saw its fair share of action back in its day. It was built by R.J. Welty in the 1890s and used as a general store, though there were rooms upstairs for rent. Joe Winkels operated the “Ramona Inn” here, and from 1908 until 1933 while most of Riverside County was dry, Winkels offered “refreshments”, pool tables, card games and even slot machines! While over at the First National Bank of Temecula the historical hubbub was kept down to only one robbery in its lifetime (the bank was eventually replaced by a Mexican restaurant). If all the history surrounding you during your visit gets your curiosity going and you’d like to know the real scoop on the town’s past – stop into the Temecula Museum – it’s fun and informative and even has a great little area outside for family picnics.

This is the Welty Building then and now – what a difference!
If your unbelievably energetic kids are wearing you out, take them down to Pennypickle’s Imagination Workshop Children’s Museum – this award-winning space will keep pace with even the most enthusiastic young ‘researcher’ in an interactive wonderland that blends fun with learning science. If your kids love Bill Nye the Science Guy and Nickelodeon, they will go crazy for Pennypickle’s. And depending on when you visit you might be able to drop them off – go have a relaxing afternoon to yourself – and pick them up happy, bursting with new things they’ve learned and completely tuckered out.
